Deep in the bleak midwinter
Here in Northwest Washington, 2025 has dawned wet and mild. So mild that there are still snapdragons blooming in my boggy garden, we’ve yet to have more than one hard frost. The only silver lining of which is that I’ve easily managed to get away with not having any warm winter coats that fit over my now 34 week pregnant belly.
Our garlic is rooting, though frequently dug-up by pesky squirrels.
Chickadees, winter wrens, bushtits, towhees, sparrows and juncos have been flocking to our suet feeders.
Hellebores are blooming (see above).
And as February creeps closer, I’m starting to feel very, very tired.
